Home Depot is known to be the go-to hardware store for home improvement and construction materials. Their DIY experts on the floor are quick to help customers find the right parts and share knowledge on how to install them. When smart home products arrived on their salesfloor, they were not as familiar with the technology’s capabilities and therefore weren’t able to speak on them as much to their customers. To assist the DIY experts, we created a quick guide they could keep in their apron pockets to reference when needed. This comprehensive guide would help sales associates find the right products for the right purpose to provide an informative recommendation to their customers.

The Pocket Guides proved to be successful as they were quick to reference on the salesfloor and filled with information within a clear layout. We were asked to produce similar guides for Verizon and Best Buy retailers for the Google Pixel phone series.

The Pocket Guide was broken down categorically by Smart Displays & Speakers, Video Doorbell, Thermostats, Cameras, Safety, Security, Lock, and Services. Each of these categories could be easily thumbed by color-coded page tabs.

Each section gives a product intro, tech specs, comparison charts, and voice commands for demonstration in bite-sized pieces. The Services category entailed subscription services, such as the Nest App and Nest Aware, that make products such as the Nest Cam and Doorbell more beneficial for its users. In addition, we added product pairing suggestions in each section to help customers get more out of their smart home experience.
